EARLI SIG 14 Conference 2022

In 2022, Paderborn University is host of the bi-annual conference of the EARLI Special Interest Group 14 “Learning and Professional Development” (SIG14). The SIG 14 brings together a variety of researchers with different backgrounds that devote themselves to studying work and education as contexts for professional learning and development. Typical research topics that are covered by affiliates of EARLI SIG 14 are:

  • Theories and methodologies for the study of professional learning and development;
  • constraints and affordances of professional learning and work identities;
  • vocational education and training in schooling and working life contexts;
  • learning during and through work;
  • adult learning processes within the context of work.

Members of the SIG 14 and other scholars interested in these topics meet every two years for a designated three day conference. The first meeting took place in the year 2002, meaning that we will celebrate the conference's 20 years anniversary in Paderborn. Coincidentally, Paderborn University will celebrate its 50 years birthday at the same time, making this a particular opportunity to both look back at what has been achieved during the years and get inspired for the next 20 or 50 years ahead of us.

For this purpose, a platform for discussion and professional exchange is provided. A range of different presentation formats including keynote lectures, thematic symposia, single paper presentations, poster presentations and others are planned during the conference. A more concrete call for presentations will be published shortly.

First information in a nutshell

Time plan

The conference will take place on three consecutive days between Wednesday, 17 August and Friday, 19 August 2022. It is planned to officially start the conference Wednesday morning and end it on Friday afternoon. This should give you the opportunity to comfortably arrange your travel. Just before the start of the conference an informal gathering will be held on the Tuesday evening (16 August).

Other important deadlines will be announced as soon as possible. So please stay tuned.

Location

The conference will be hosted in Paderborn by Paderborn University. Paderborn, a city with about 144.000 inhabitants, is located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westfalia in the western part of Germany. The university is home to a little bit more than 20.000 students. It has a strong focus on digitalisation and technology but also serves as a large initial teacher training institution. Almost all university buildings can be found on its compact campus. The conference itsfelf will take place in a modern building constructed in 2012 (Building L).

Paderborn is a former medieval city with a 1200 year history. Probably the most iconic landmarks of the city are its Cathedral as well as the more than 200 springs in the city centre that give birth to the river Pader, which is infamous for being the shortest river of Germany.

Covid-19 hygiene measures

It is still unclear how strongly the EARLI SIG 14 conference in Paderborn will be affected by the current Covid-19 pandemic. Although we hope that by August 2022 a large share of the world population will be vaccinated against the virus, we still plan certain hygiene measures that allow all attendees a safe and pleasant conference experience. The following measures are planned:

  • Sufficient and abundant disinfectants around the conference venue.
  • Spacious rooms that can be ventilated.
  • Outside areas for informal gathering using marquees.
  • ...

Your safety is one of our most important concerns during the ongoing conference planning.

Travel information

Travelling to Paderborn can be done by plane, train, bus or car. About 20 minutes car or bus ride away from Paderborn is a smaller local airport called Paderborn-Lippstadt (PAD) that can be reached via Munich (MUC). The closest international airport is Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) being two hours away from Paderborn by train. Apart from that several long-distance and regional trains including bus lines stop in Paderborn. The train station is conveniently located in 10 minutes walking distance from the city centre.
