EARLI SIG14 Conference 2022

In 2022, Paderborn University is host of the bi-annual conference of the EARLI Special Interest Group 14 “Learning and Professional Development” (SIG14). The SIG14 brings together a variety of researchers with different backgrounds that devote themselves to studying work and education as contexts for professional learning and development. Typical research topics that are covered by affiliates of EARLI SIG14 are:

  • Theories and methodologies for the study of professional learning and development;
  • constraints and affordances of professional learning and work identities;
  • vocational education and training in schooling and working life contexts;
  • learning during and through work;
  • adult learning processes within the context of work.

Members of the SIG14 and other scholars interested in these topics meet every two years for a designated three day conference. The first meeting took place in the year 2002, meaning that we will celebrate the conference's 20 years anniversary in Paderborn. Coincidentally, Paderborn University will celebrate its 50 years birthday at the same time, making this a particular opportunity to both look back at what has been achieved during the years and get inspired for the next 20 or 50 years ahead of us.

For this purpose, a platform for discussion and professional exchange is provided.

The conference will take place on three consecutive days between Wednesday, 17th August and Friday, 19th August 2022. It is planned for the conference to officially start on Wednesday morning and end on Friday afternoon (see below for the rough timeframe). This should give you the opportunity to comfortably arrange your travels. Just before the start of the conference, an informal gathering will be held on Tuesday evening (16th August).

  • Conference start: 9:00 am on Wednesday, August 17th
  • Conference ending: The last session on Friday, August 19th will end at around 3:30 pm with an official farewell afterwards (until about 4:15 pm).

The detailed programme can be found here.

The conference will be hosted in Paderborn by Paderborn University (venue: Universität Paderborn - Gebäude LFanny-Nathan-Straße, 33098 Paderborn or Pohlweg 57, 33098 Paderborn). Paderborn, a city with about 144.000 inhabitants, is located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westfalia in the western part of Germany. The university is home to a little more than 20.000 students. It has a strong focus on digitalisation and technology but also serves as a large initial teacher training institution. Almost all university buildings can be found on its compact campus. The conference itself will take place in the L-Building, one of the university's modern buildings.

Paderborn is a former medieval city with 1200 years of history. Probably the most iconic landmarks of the city are its Cathedral as well as the more than 200 springs in the city centre that give birth to the river Pader, which is infamous for being the shortest river of Germany.

The local organising committee consists of Prof. Dr. Christian Harteis, Dr. Carina Caruso, Stephan Drechsler, Dr. Dagmar Festner, PD Dr. Michael Goller, Christiane Müller, and Bianca Steffen, who are all working at the Institute of Educational Science at the Paderborn University. This team is actively supported by Sebastian Anselmann, who serves as SIG14 JURE Coordinator and works at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd.
